The 1991 Super Bowl halftime show was history’s worst ever

As we close in on the 2018 Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots, let’s remember there’s an annual event within the event that also brings out star-studded performances and creates an electric atmosphere: the halftime show.

Over the years, the halftime show has been headlined by A-listers like Prince, Beyoncé, and Bruce Springsteen, but it wasn’t always that way.

In 1991, in the midst of a classic between the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills, things changed from the traditional (marching bands, etc) to the modern (A-list music spectacle), and while the end result would eventually be fun, that year’s show, featuring a Disney salute to football (and war?) and an appearance from the New Kids on the Block was the worst we’ve ever had.

In addition, you can’t talk about how bad of a performance it was without also remembering everything from pop culture and world affairs that either bled into or came out of the disastrous attempt at a halftime show.
