Shields and Nelson will headline the “ShoBox: The New Generation” card on January 12.
Claressa Shields, who holds the WBC and IBF super middleweight titles, is one of the most dominant boxers today. At only 22 years old, she already a two-time Olympic Gold medalist. But Shields will have to defend her titles for the first time against Tori Nelson, a 41-year-old competitor from Ashburn, Virginia. This bout will headline the Jan. 12 “ShoBox: The New Generation” card on Showtime at 10 p.m. ET. Showtime (live stream) will broadcast this much-anticipated bout live from the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.
Shields (4-0, 2 KOs), who is from Flint, Michigan, went 77-1 in her amateur career before turing pro. She’s also the only American boxer to ever win two consecutive gold medals at the Olympics. Shields will look to use her combination of speed and power in this matchup.
However, Nelson (17-0-3, 2 KOs) took an unusual route to this fight. She began boxing at age 29 and faced tons of obstacles leading up to this match. Nelson is a three-time Golden Gloves recipient and won numerous belts in her career.
But this fight against Shields will be the biggest fight of her career. Even though Nelson is nearly 20 years older than Shields, she has one huge advantage in this match: experience.
